But at the same time, state-level governments are pushing and passing legislation that could ban teaching about the reason for the holiday.
Teaching critical race theory has been effectively banned in at least six states, and over 20 states are pushing similar bills through legislatures.
In Oklahoma, many educators say that critical race theory is essential to reckoning with the state’s past. Others have said the law undermines efforts to discuss Oklahoma’s history of racial terror against Black and Indigenous people.

💥 from @kromantiexperience Agorsah’s work at #NannyTown recovered an interesting variety of #artefacts. Among those recovered were Spanish gold coins from the mid seventeenth century wine and medicine #bottles, tin-glazed #earthenware, bellarmines, red- clay and white-clay smoking pipes (see #pipes and #smoking), glass and stone #beads, and locally produced earthenware and terracotta figurines, which seem to be #Taino in origin, indicate that there was an indigenous occupation of the site either immediately before, or during, the time that Nanny Town was occupied by the maroons. This open the possibility that African and Indian coexisted in maroon sites, which was known to have happened historically in other contexts like Hispaniola, Cuba and the North and South American mainlands but was previously unknown in Jamaica. It has long been assumed that the indigenous population of Jamaica was eradicated by the Spanish prior to the British conquest in 1655; evidence from Nanny Town suggests otherwise.
